FAQ

How does therapy help with anxiety?

Therapeutic conversations can help to reduce or remove the effects of anxiety. Anxiety can be caused by a variety of factors, including stressful events, certain medications or medical conditions, overbearing worry,  genetics,  and personality type. Therapy can help you identify specific factors that are contributing to anxiety showing up. Working with a therapist can help you develop and practice effective ways to lessen negative effects of anxiety.

Will my concerns be kept confidential?

At Attune Counselling Therapy, we maintain strict confidentiality with all conversations and materials from our sessions. All information about you is held in the strictest privacy and security. You have the right to control access to any information that we maintain about you. Without your signed permission, no information is released about our work together. All our counselling therapists adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. The practice follows the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Nova Scotia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP). In our first meeting, we'll talk about our commitments to provide you with professional and confidential therapeutic services.

How do I know if I need therapy for my anxiety?

You might consider therapy for anxiety if worry or fear begin to interfere with your daily activities, relationships, or work. People often know it is time to talk with someone when anxiety is ruining their sense of well-being. If you find yourself avoiding situations due to extreme worry or anxiety, or if you’re experiencing physical symptoms like trouble sleeping, muscle tension, or feeling on edge, it may be time to talk with someone. It’s important to know that there is no right or wrong answer–whether or not you seek support is a personal decision. During an introductory phone call, we can explore if therapy can be of support to your current experiences. Working together, we can offer strategies to help you manage anxiety and help you improve your sense of well-being.

How long does it typically take to see improvements?

Counselling can be a very effective and powerful way to work through concerns or issues that are currently a part of your life. People take different lengths of time to reach the outcomes they desire. Some issues will see us working together in short-term sessions. More complex concerns and long-standing patterns may take more time to resolve. In either case, we'll work together to monitor progress toward outcomes important to you.

Most people start with one session per week for a few weeks. We typically suggest meeting every week for several sessions and then gradually spacing appointments further apart. We'll come up with a plan for how often we work together that is sensitive to your schedule and needs.

How much does therapy cost?

Attune Counselling Therapy offers a variety of therapeutic services. Fees are based on the service offered and session length. The first 15-minute phone consultation is always free. This helps ensure that we are a good fit to support you. To view pricing of each session, visit our booking link.

If you have health insurance, it may cover all or a portion of the costs of counselling therapy. Our staff are registered providers with the following third-party insurance insurance companies:

  • Green Shield Canada  (direct billing available)
